Non-Nevada casino minimums (COVID edition) part 5
If you are reporting about a casino, could you please try to include the following:
Name of the casino
Where it's located
What time of day and is it a weekday or weekend?
Max odds
Field pays
Side bets available (Repeater, ATS, Firebet)
Are there dividers or how many are shooting per side
The more information we have, the better off we will be. We all know that tables can change rapidly. I saw a table go from 25 to 15 to 100 at the Flamingo in the course of a few hours. I'll try to keep the mins what is reported the most and add other information in the comments like "found this table at $5 on graveyard shift" so people konw that isn't the norm These tables can be a pain to maintain, so please provide as much information as possible. An informed roller is a beter roller.

Part 3 in the COVID series. To try and make this list more helpful, I have added Weekend Day and Weekend Night, as those can be vastly different than during the week. I'm trying to monitor Twitter and the Vegas Message Board to get some additional information. Keep sharing all that wonderful goodness. I'd like to update the wiki to talk about what sidebets casinos have, so if you know that info, I can add it to the table comments.

*Last update 8/21 Part 1. It's getting buried so I figured we would make a new one. Part 2 Pulled additional info from here.
https://www.gambling.com/news/unibet-entering-indiana-and-iowa-sports-betting-markets-2207600 Unibet is coming to Indiana and Iowa. And in effect, it’s coming to the state wedged between them: Illinois. Kindred Group on Tuesday announced a 10-year agreement with Caesars Entertainment to gain market access into Indiana and Iowa – and “potentially other states,” according to a news release – to operate both online sports betting and gaming through its Unibet brand. Kindred, through Unibet, can immediately begin seeking licenses in both states, which would double its footprint in the United States. Unibet currently operates in New Jersey and Pennsylvania sportsbooks. Its online Pennsylvania sportsbook is operated in partnership with Mohegan Sun. Unibet’s New Jersey sportsbook is through a deal with Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City. In Indiana, Unibet will ally with a Caesar’s Horsehoe Hammond property less than 30 miles from Chicago, giving it a key outpost to tap into an Illinois market left fallow because of regulatory delays. Most important, the deal will bring mobile and online betting options to a property battling to compete financially without it.
Unibet Can Tap Into Chicago Market
Sports betting was legalized in Illinois in June, but a launch date remains nebulous and seemingly far-off. So Illinois bettors continue to pour over the Indiana border from the city of 2.7 million to patronize the likes of Horseshoe Hammond and DraftKings-affiliated Ameristar East Chicago. Ameristar’s January sports betting handle of $73,037,356 led all 13 Indiana providers – $170,813,254 was collected in the state – with $65,993,539 coming from that sportsbook via mobile. Caesars never launched a mobile product for Horseshoe Hammond, negating its proximity as the nearest Indiana sportsbook to the Chicago metropolitan area. Unibet’s Iowa peg will be at Harrah’s Council Bluffs, which is just across the Missouri River from Omaha, Nebraska, and nestled in the metropolitan statistical area of nearly a million. Mobile betting accounted for about 59% of Iowa sports betting handle in January. Ten of 19 Iowa sportsbooks offer mobile or online sports betting. Kindred US senior vice president Manuel Stan said he was “thrilled” to expand the company’s American presence with Caesars.
The next morning was rough. I felt like a two day old turd on a month old mat of maggots. But it was just a car ride back to Chicago - there would be no physical moving involved in my day for the most part. Sure, I had to get out of bed and go down to the car and then get out of the car, but I could manage that. I'm a fighter. Before leaving I had asked the groom if any of the many casinos we saw on the way were safe, given that they were all in Gary. He assured me the Horseshoe Casino was safe. The Horseshoe casino sits outside Garyish and has a breathtaking view of Chicago from that dump, Indiana. It's owned by Cesar's Palace and is a magnificent stop on your way back to civilization. I lost 300 dollars on a Seinfeld themed game. Back in Chicago, Gay Pride was in full swing and so was traffic. My aunt lived on the main thoroughfare, so it took some time to get from the shore to the condo. But we could hear it from the shore. Once we got back the parade was in full swing. Louder and prouder than ever, the folks in Chicago really know how to Pride it up. My biggest takeaway from the parade: it was one long commercial. Every float was sponsored by you name it. At one point I saw a float that said MBLGBT and thought I missed two new groups to the party. Nope. It was Mercedes Benz Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender. I can't be for sure, but every float I saw was sponsored. Which, I understand, but it kinda takes the whole radical out of the event. The best part was when the parade was over. We walked down to Wrigley field and it was like a warzone. People of all nationalities, sexual orientations, and Coke or Pepsi preference were smashed out of their minds on intoxicants. We saw a man shivering in the 80 degree weather hunkered over and mumbling to himself. One woman was walking in the streets that were full of glass barefoot. A man was taken away in a stretcher. Beers all over the place. People coming down hard off drugs. But, luckily, no sex. The parade really brought everyone in town together to do drugs in a somewhat safe environment. However, a number of people were very bad at doing drugs. The police made a strong, military presence, but seemed quiet accommodating and friendly. After walking through block after block of rave aftermath we got to majestic Wrigley. Then we went looking for pizza. We ended up at this stuffed crust affair that honestly just tasted like Flying Pie. Back home, we sat and watched the leftovers from the parade. People were out all night just roaming the streets and cursing, hugging, or almost getting in fights. There was a threesome of women made up of a victim, a protector, and a lookout. The victim seemed to be coming down hard off something and the protector kept hugging her, giving her water, and talking her down. Then the lookout would walk out on the street and make sure no one saw them. But the lookout really sucked at this job because she would start doing it and then go to a window and start staring at her reflection. This went on for about two hours. Finally, someone came and picked them up. But they were far from safe, because the car that picked them up almost hit two other cars stopped at a light. I thought about going back to the Gyro place, but didn't. The type of people still on the street late at night after that party would probably be looking for blood. Thus ends my trip to Chicago and Indiana. On the way back I stole this dude's hotdog at the airport on accident, but that was about it. Well, I didn't steal it. The guy in front of me stole mine and I took the next one that was the other guys cuz it was Chicago style and I don't like Chicago style. To me, the best hotdog is the 7/11: Mustard, onions, and cheese sauce. Now! Now you have learned something.
Route Between Horseshoe and Lake Shoredrive Extension along lake?
Riding up to Chicago from Northwest Indiana tomorrow, I have done this route many times and usually after Wolf Lake I just take the Burnham Greenway to South Chicago/ East Chicago neighborhood and hop on the South Lake Shore Drive Extension. I was looking at Strava heatmaps and it looks like there is a heat line along the lake from Horseshoe Casino up to Calumet Park. Anyone know how this is? Is it gravel or payment? Doable on road bikes? Appears good on Google maps, just a industrial area. Here a picture as well of the location I'm asking about. https://imgur.com/gallery/Rv42rvs Also on a more lesser note, on the way home I'm hoping to take the Burnham Greenway that's west of Wolf Lake, south into Cal city...it looks the two parts of the path's don't connect and I have to ride Burnham to Pukaski then over to the trail again. That a decently safe route traffic wise? Self Update: Did the ride this Saturday morning, the new trail north of Horseshoe to Calumet Park is amazing, it makes the ride to Chicago from NWI so so so much better. I'll be way quicker to do this ride. Regarding my second part I tried the Burnham Greenway route. Like SavageOrc said, the road ride isn't to bad and for being a fast 4 lane road, the traffic was very low on that route. I road Burnham to Sibley then cut over to the Burnham greenway again. It wasn't a bad ride, but now that I've done it once to say I've done it I'll just stick closer to the lake. Route for anyone interested. https://imgur.com/mh9EaWR

Donatas Bondorovas 18(6)-4-1 vs William Monroe Jr 15(6)-1
6 rounds middleweight division
Cerresso Fort 17(11)-2-1 vs Vitaliy Kopylenko 22(12)-0
6 rounds middleweight division
Brandon Adams 12(8)-0 vs Daniel Edouard 23(14)-4-2

J’Leon Love 16(9)-0 vs Vladine Biosse 15(7)-2-2
10 rounds super middleweight division Love at one point in time appeared to be one of Mayweather Promotion’s fast rising prospects who would undoubtedly hold a world title someday, sooner rather than later. A meeting with Gabriel Rosado resulted in a controversial win. Leon was dropped in round 6 and later had the win turned to a no contest after he failed a post-fight test. Love has since fallen out of contention for title shot status and it appears he has a long way to go before rejoining the fold. This is another small step for him in facing Biosse. Biosse is a regional fighter who will probably sell a lot of tickets, but ultimately has come up short in his attempts against good opposition. He’s coming off a draw and a TKO last year against Marcus Upshaw. If Love doesn’t make easy work of this, serious doubts will arise about whether Love can ever compete at an elite level.
Mickey Bey 19(10)-1-1 vs Alan Herrera 32(21)-5
10 rounds lightweight division Bey is a very good prospect. His one loss came against John Molina who pulled off a nice 10th round upset after being thoroughly beaten for the other 9 rounds. Bey is slick, he boxes beautifully, and mixes punches up very nicely. Even after the loss, I still think he’s got a bright future if he can tuck that chin and stay responsible on defense. Herrera is quite experienced for a 24 year old. He hasn’t fought since last August where he was dropped and beaten over 6 rounds. Bey should have this in the bag.
Badou Jack 16(11)-0-1 vs Derek Edwards 26(13)-3-1
10 rounds super middleweight division Ok Badou Jack, it’s all up to you now. J’Leon doesn’t appear to have it. Bey already took a loss. We don’t really know what we got with Pearson. It’s up to you to carry Mayweather Promotions. Are you up for it? Maybe. I like Jack and his style, but there are still a lot of questions about his game. Edwards won’t be much of a test. He’s coming off a knockout loss to Matt Korobov. Jack will eventually be properly tested. Friday won’t be that day. Saturday March 1 From GETEC Arena, Magdeburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany Time: 9:00 AM EST, 12:00 PM PST, 8:00 PM GMT Television: Boxnation (UK) SAT1 (Germany) Fight Thread: Yes
Robert Stieglitz 46(26)-3 vs Arthur Abraham 38(28)-4
12 rounds WBO super middleweight title Robert Stieglitz has held the WBO super middleweight title since August of 2009 when he knocked out Karoly Bazsay. There was a brief interlude in 2012 Stieglitz was separated form his title. An upset loss to Arthur Abraham who had previously been beaten by the real super middleweight champion of the world, Andre Ward, Carl Froch, and Andre Dirrell. In the rematch, Abraham developed a massive swelling out of his eye and the fight was stopped in the 4th because he could no longer see out of the eye. Since then, Abraham has won both fights he’s been in and while his last fight was a very wide decision, Abraham appears to have slipped quite a bit. The question will be whether Stieglitz has too. If he hasn’t Stieglitz will win an easy decision. From City Academy Sports Centre, Bristol, Avon, UK Time: 10:00 AM EST, 1:00 PM PST, 9:00 PM GMT Television: Channel 5 (UK) Fight Thread: No
James DeGale 17(11)-1 vs Gevorg Khatchikian 20(8)-0
12 rounds super middleweight division DeGale was once one of the UK’s rising prospects in the super middleweight division. He then entered into a sink or swim fight with another undefeated super middleweight prospect. That prospect was a 23 year old named George Groves. Groves was the more experienced that night, and today he reigns as one of the most beloved fighters in the world (coming off a loss.) While Groves will be facing Carl Froch in the coming months, DeGale is still rebuilding. Khatchikian has a nice record, but he’s never fought away from his home in the Netherlands. Maybe DeGale can have another gut check fight with Callum Smith. (Note: Degale was originally supposed to be in an eliminator fight with Badou Jack.)
Lee Haskins 28(12)-3 vs Elton Dharry 15(9)-5-1
12 rounds bantamweight division
Hughie Fury 13(8)-0 vs TBA
? rounds heavyweight division Apparently TBA had foul words to say about Fury’s back acne which made Boxnation’s HD debut that much more glorious. I expect TBA to put up a hell of a fight for the first 15 seconds of the fight before Fury unloads a vicious body attack to put him away. Ricky Burns 36(11)-2-1 vs Terence Crawford 22(16)-0
12 rounds WBO lightweight title I get asked this question a lot. Who are the best prospects in boxing? Or, who are the young up-and-comers out there that I should check out? You know where I’m going with this if you know about Terence Crawford. My next question is, are you a fan of slick boxers, the kinds of guys who can make their opponent miss and then make them pay? Because to this point in his career, Terence Crawford is that guy; I don’t believe he’s lost a round in his entire career. On Saturday he’ll fight for the lightweight title against one of the toughest guys in the sport… and Crawford is the favorite. Burns hasn’t looked good in his last 2 fights. He had a controversial win over Jose Gonzalez after Gonzalez quit with a wrist injury and Ray Beltran broke his jaw and dropped him. And yet, Burns has prevailed. This is the biggest test of Crawford’s young career. If he breezes past Burns, all of our suspicions will be confirmed. If he loses, we’ll have to chalk it up to him being yet another product of clever match-making and HBO spotlight. Burns has 2 losses on his ledger, both came when he was young and still fighting on the domestic UK scene. Since then he’s moved up to lightweight and hasn’t been beaten in 6 years. Burns has been dropped before, but has shown to have tremendous heart. With only 11 stoppage wins for Burns and Crawford not exactly being a devastating puncher, this has 12 rounds written all over it. I like Crawford in this. He’s got a significant reach advantage and very recently Burns has shown a weakness toward fighters who can box well. Crawford has proven to have next level boxing ability and will pose a lot of problems for Burns.
John Simpson 25(11)-10 vs John Murray 32(19)-2
10 rounds lightweight division
Scott Cardle 13(2)-0 vs Paul Appleby 19(11)-5
8 rounds lightweight division
Anthony Joshua 4(4)-0 vs Hector Alfredo Avila 22(14)-15-1
6 rounds heavyweight division Joshua seemed to be on the fast track in the heavyweight division, but either Eddie Hearn has lost interest or hasn’t been too impressed. Avila is tested and experienced, but Joshua shouldn’t have too much trouble.
Anthony Ogogo 4(2)-0 vs Greg O’Neill 3-1
6 rounds middleweight division Ogogo looked absolutely spectacular early on. He was the first of the British Olympians to get a pro debut and I was sure he was going to be a big hit in the middleweight division. He’s failed to stop 2 opponents and it’s since slowed his ascension down. I still think Ogogo will be special and a top contender at middleweight, but it won’t be anytime soon. From Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas Time: 9:45 PM EST, 6:45 PM PST, 2:00 AM GMT (I think Boxnation will get the Juan Diaz fight) Television: HBO (USA) Boxnation (UK) Main Event (Australia) Sport 1 (Hungary) Fight Thread: Yes
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr 47(32)-1-1 vs Brian Vera 23(14)-7
12 rounds super middleweight division Making weight will be a victory for Chavez Jr. Beating Vera will only be icing on the cake. Chavez Jr has said that there’s a new maturity and responsibility in his life after the birth of his first daughter. If he holds true to his word, he’ll make weight and beat Brian Vera without any controversy this time around. Vera has been training in a state of the art facility with a gameplan that no doubt includes having the stamina to overwhelm the plodding legend’s son with a ton of punches and movement. Vera began boxing late in life and his defensive lapses show it. He gets caught with flush shots when he’s out of position and those shots were the difference between winning and losing the first fight with Chavez Jr. Actually, I take that back. Not because it’s not true, in my eyes and any respectable boxing fan’s eyes that’s certainly true. But in the eyes of Gwen Adair and Marty Denkin (who both saw a resounding victory for Chavez) avoiding those shots wouldn’t have made much of a case for Vera to win the first fight. I will say this about their first fight. It is true that Chavez Jr landed the harder, more significant punches. I thought there was a point when he could have stopped Vera if he turned up the fire. And yet, the most generous score I could have given in favor Chavez Jr was a draw. On the other side, a generous score for Vera would be something 96-94 at most. Going into this fight, Chavez Jr remains the favorite. Bovada is asking for $500 bucks to yield a $100 dollar return. If Vera can use lateral movement and escape exchanges without going back in a straight line, victory will be his. Unfortunately for Chavez Jr, should he win this fight, Andre Ward will be his prize.
Orlando Salido 40(28)-12-2 vs Vasyl Lomachenko 1(1)-0
12 rounds WBO featherweight title Top Rank is looking to make history. They’ve got perhaps the greatest amateur boxer ever and they’re looking to make him a champion in only his second professional fight. It’s never been done. They looked at the landscape of champions at featherweight and chose Orlando Salido, fresh off a dominating win over Orlando Cruz, as the opponent for a guy who’s 1 fight removed from head gear and the lol amateur scoring system. They deemed Salido the better match instead of Simpiwe Vetyeka (Donaire gets him), Jhonny Gonzalez, and Evgeny Gradovich. (Gonzalez wouldn’t happen because of promotional issues.) If ever a guy with only one fight on his resume could win a title in his second fight, it’s Lomachenko. It won’t be easy though. Salido has some pop, he’s got massive determination, and he’s got a… “veteran” ruggedness to him. Will Lomachenko be able to deal with it? Betting sites have Lomachenko as a heavy favorite. I know Salido’s record indicates that this is all but a done deal for Lomachenko, but in the past couple of years, nobody has fought Salido and gotten an easy win. Even Mikey Garcia who knocked him down what seemed like 10 times began to struggle late and had his nose broken. My only question is can Lomachenko hang for 12 rounds? Salido will no doubt look to test that by pressuring him early and seeing how he holds up when the championship rounds roll along.
Juan Diaz 38(19)-4 vs Gerardo Robles 16(7)-12
10 rounds lightweight division The baby bull returns! Again. He fought three times last year after taking a three year hiatus from the sport. Diaz has always been a forward-marching brawler who brings action. Robles is coming off 2 straight losses (including one to rising prospect Jose Felix Jr) and has never done well against stiff competition. Even if Diaz was half the fighter he was before the hiatus, he'd take care of Robles easy. Look for an early stoppage here.
Oscar Valdez 8(8)-0 vs Samuel Sanchez 6(1)-4-1
6 rounds featherweight division My favorite prospect in all of boxing. He's polished, patient, puts together punches well, basically everything you'd want to see if you were building a fighter to someday win a title. I think Valdez, along with Luke Campbell and Zou Shiming, needs to step up their competition. I don't believe he's really learning much mowing through these kids that are clearly not as skilled as him. A step up would force Valdez to grow rather than refine what we already know he's good at. I promise you that as much as I praise Valdez, Bob Sheridan will make me look like indifferent on the TopRank.TV stream this Saturday.
Alex Saucedo 12(9)-0 vs Gilbert Venegas 12(8)-12-4
6 rounds welterweight division Saucedo is almost reckless. He's still quite green, but I like what I see out of him. This is definitely one of the better prospects out there and I think when they elevate his competition, you'll see him grow into one of the better, aggressive fighters out there.
Tuesday March 4
From Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand Time: ? Television: ? Fight Thread: No Yodmongkol Vor Saengthep 33(20)-2 vs Takuya Kogawa 22(13)-3 12 rounds interim WBA world flyweight title Saengthep goes by another alias, Yongmongkol CP Freshmart. I didn’t even realize this was him until I looked closer. Anyway, CP Freshmart is on his way in the flyweight division. A win here will most likely earn him a shot against Juan Carlos Reveco somewhere down the line. It won’t be easy though. Kogawa once took Pongsaklek Wonjongkam 12 rounds. He came up short, but has since been a solid competitor on the Japanese domestic scene. I believe Freshmart’s power will be the difference here (as well as the fact that they’re fighting in his hometown.)
I have been playing poker and going to the casino for awhile now. I Like playing games like holdem or "ultimate texas holdem" a popular casino game where I go. I'm wanting to get into blackjack. I understand the rules, read everything in the sidebar, and wiki. Plan on using basic strategy I found in the sidebar and play this weekend at the $5 tables. Not ready to start talking about card counting I was just wanting advice or tips on playing basic strategy blackjack and hoping to get lucky. Any advise for a new player would be greatly appreciated. EDIT: will be playing at French lick casino and horseshoe southern Indiana for anybody familiar with those casinos and what version of blackjack they play

[WEEKEND RECAP] Burns vs Crawford, Salido vs Lomachenko, Chavez Jr vs Vera, Budler vs Diaz, Saengthep vs Kogawa + more
Thursday February 27
From The Conference & Event Center, Niagra Falls, New York
Greg Brady stopped Joel Shojgreen in 2 rounds
This isn’t the Brady you’re thinking of.
Friday February 28
From Horseshoe Casino, Hammond, Indiana
Raymond Gatica stopped Sena Agbeko in the 4th round to advance to the quarterfinals in the Boxcino middleweight tournament
For a guy with 15 pro fights, Agbeko has in terrible condition for this fight. He looked gassed early on and it wasn’t tough for Gatica to find the mark and tag him often. The end came in the 4th round. Gatica had Agbeko in the corner and unloaded everything in the kitchen sink. Agbeko hardly had the strength to keep his hands up and the referee stepped in to stop the action.
Willie Monroe Jr won a 6 round unanimous decision over Donatas Bondorovas
Vitaliy Kopylenko stopped Cerresso Fort in the 2nd round
The 2nd round began with both fighters coming to the center, Kopylenko shot a heavy jab to the chin on Fort and down went Fort. Fort got up and tried to engage but was countered with power shots with every opening he created and the referee called off the bout when Fort rose to his feet was clearly on spaghetti legs (not al dente, either.)
Brandon Adams stopped Daniel Edouard in the 4th round
It looked to me like Edouard would be able to outbox Adams with his long reach. A short counter left hook from Adams was the beginning of the end in the 4th. Adams dropped Edouard with the left and continued to find it and mix his punches up to stop Edouard. From Turning Stone Resort & Casino, Verona, New York
J’Leon Love stopped Vladine Biosse in the 10th and final round
Derek Edwards stopped Badou Jack by technical knockout in the 1st round
It appeared that Derek Edwards saw on gaping hole in Badou Jack’s game and decided that that was the one and only play he had. If he had hoped to win, he’d have to use that hail mary every chance he got. A lazy Badou Jack and Edwards would counter with a thunderous overhand right directly on the chin. You can tell from the opening bell that he was looking for it. It connected flush with the force that just about every super middleweight out there would have buckled from. Yet another Mayweather Promotions fight gets upset.
Christopher Pearson won a split decision over Lanardo Tyner
Imagine you’re Floyd Mayweather sitting in the crowd watching the guys you promote and you might have the upcoming interview with Showtime to promote your next fight. One guy gets sick and another gets bumped up on the card. He’s an experienced young fighter with solid amateur experience and heavy hands. My take on Pearson is that he throws more of a “stay back” jab that doesn’t have a ton of power behind it and when he faces guys like Tyner who’s gameplan is to take away the outside game and keep the fight inside, he will struggle. Guys who come forward and want to fight ear to ear need to have their heads jabbed off to convince them that coming inside is too dangerous.
Saturday March 1
From GETEC Arena, Magdeburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany
Arthur Abraham won the WBO super middleweight title defeating Robert Stieglitz by split decision
Abraham rallied and did enough work to upset the reigning WBO super middleweight champion. It may as well be the European championship though because the real title belongs to Andre Ward. Anyway, Abraham looks reborn at age 34 if you catch my drift. From World Trade Center, Naucalpan, Mexico
Fernando Angulo stopped Pablo Cesar Cano in the 9th round due to a cut
Pablo Cesar Cano is one of the toughest guys out there and I love to watch this kid fight. He’s got a heart as big as the HBO truck, but his skin is rice paper thin. Despite his tremendous heart and talent, it may not be wise for Cano to continue boxing. Check out these pictures. This is consistently happening to the kid. Look at the referee’s face when he looks at Cano and stops it. From Scottish Exhibition Centre, Glasgow, Scotland, UK
Terence Crawford won the WBO lightweight title from Ricky Burns by UD
Crawford went into hostile territory and boxed a beautiful 12 rounds to decisively win the lightweight title. Unless Burns is completely done, and I don’t think he is, Crawford put on a master performance which elevated the American to the top spot in the lightweight division. Burns definitely had a ton of excuses already pre-built into the fight, but after the fight he was all praises for Crawford.
John Murray stopped John Simpson by TKO2
Simpson hit the deck 3 times in the 2nd round before the referee waved off the contest. Simpson was coming off a tough KO against Derry Mathews.
Anthony Ogogo won on points against Greg O’Neill.
Anthony Joshua knocked Hector Alfredo Avila out in 1 round.
A quick win for the big guy. From City Academy Sports Centre, Bristol, Avon, UK
James DeGale stopped Gevorg Khatchikian in the 11th round
A good win for DeGale who continues to build himself into super middleweight contention. From Emperors Palace, Kempton Park, Gauteng, South Africa
Hekkie Budler won the WBA world minimumweight title against Karluis Diaz by KO1
An easy win for Budler and a unification fight with number one rated Katsunari Takayama seems imminent. From Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr won a unanimous decision over Brian Vera
Chavez Jr looked like the guy who almost upset the middleweight champion of the world. In fact, he looked a little better. He definitely has the same old Chavez Jr weight advantage that we’ve seen in the past, but his timing improved. He was able to tag Vera with the same punches over and over and decisively win the fight this time. The saving grace for Vera is that he appeared to hurt his hand very early in the fight and it was obvious. He stopped sitting on his punches around the 4th round and that’s about the time Chavez Jr really began to assert himself in the fight. Aside from the final round, which was a joke, Chavez Jr looked impressive and ready to start fighting other contenders in… I guess the super middleweight division if that’s where he’s going to stay.
Orlando Salido won via split decision over Vasyl Lomachenko
I can’t remember a prospect that turned pro with more hype than Lomachenko. I can’t remember a debut that was as electrifiying as Lomachenko’s was. I was excited. I thought history could be made if he was matched up correctly, given he hasn’t had much experience against the more rugged pro styles. Then the Bradley-Marquez card comes along. Salido battered Orlando Cruz and there were rumblings that Lomachenko would go after Salido in his second career fight. I groaned. What a mistake! I thought, we’ve all fallen in love with the idea and the potential upside of this Ukrainian winning machine. We’ve become blind to reality. On Saturday, reality hit hard. Reality does not play by any rules other than the ones it sets. Reality came in the form of low blows, hits during the clinch with the free arm, and a weight it felt comfortable at rather than the weight that was agreed upon. Lomachenko learned a valuable lesson. One could make the argument that he learned mid fight and didn’t adjust in time. The very thing that made people hesitant to crown Lomachenko as the heir to the featherweight throne, inexperience, would be that which would lead to his defeat. Lomachenko can find solace in the fact that he was the better man that night, and perhaps if he was the man a year from now after a couple of learning fights, he would have possibly stopped Salido with all his advantages. The reality of the night was that Salido took away what made Lomachenko great. He instilled fear in Lomachenko. Fear of the headbutt. Lomachenko became hesitant to throw body shots and work on the inside. He had nothing to do other than clinch. Salido didn’t win the outside game, but his inside work was what won him the fight. I felt Lomachenko did enough to have an argument for the fight, and his tremendous heart at the end of the fight where he turned up intensity and let it all hang out certainly closed the gap. To quote Mark Twain in a half-assed way that I’m sure he would approve of, the report of Lomachenko’s loss have been greatly exaggerated. He showed everything I needed to see to be optimistic about his future. (For the record, I was never sold on Lomachenko and I thought Salido was beat him.)
Juan Diaz won a UD over Gerardo Robles
Diaz didn’t look in shape, and frankly his performance was underwhelming. Still, he did enough to beat an overmatched opponent.
Oscar Valdez stopped Samuel Sanchez in the 3rd round
Valdez came out and did what he does best. He took his time and broke Sanchez down. Sanchez was game, but his defense made Valdez look like a surgeon. Valdez began to land heavy shots that were wobbling Sanchez every time they landed. The stoppage was a bit controversial as the referee stepped in after a left wobbled Sanchez and called it off.
Jose Zepeda scored a 2nd round stoppage over Johnnie Edwards
Zepeda is a little irresponsible on defense. I feel a quick fighter can catch him, but he’s thus far compensated with terrific footwork and a good amount of power. Zepeda scored the easy stoppage over Edwards.
Alex Saucedo won a UD over Gilbert Venegas
Venegas was brought in to test Saucedo. He certainly did. Saucedo looked like a guy who was in a fight. He paid for his recklessness and while he won easy on the cards, it wasn’t an easy fight. Saucedo is still very green and needs more seasoning.
Tuesday March 4
From Suranaree Army Camp Stadium, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand
Yodmongkol Vor Saengthep won a majority decision and the interim WBA world flyweight title over Takuya Kogawa
